ABSTRACT
It is genrally recognised that the teacher is an important factor in the effective implementation of any science programme.This paper examines the factors which militate against the science teacher’s effective assessment of students’ performance in science teaching: lack of competent laboratory assistant and poor renumeration to science teachers and irregular payment of thier slararis. However, the paper discusses and suggests ways the science teacher should handle his teaching to help enhance his assesment of students’ performance. The suggestions include selection of appropriate instructional objectives: conducting regular practicals, application of mastery learning techniques and practice in preparing assessment questions. Th paper concludes with suggestions on ways of assisiting the teacher to improve his assessment of student performance in science.
