Abstract
This paper identifies areas of selected STM subjects which can be taught through the use of local materials. Teachers use of materials and involvement in improvisation of materials in science teaching were investigated in this study.
The investigation revealed that many science teachers do not give priority to the use of materials in their leaching and that they are not generally involved in improvisation practices. The need to emphasize the use of materials in science teaching and to improvise for those not available was stressed. The paper further calls for a maximum utilization of the environment in science teaching in order to develop in pupils a positive attitude toward science.
