ABSTRACT
The establishment of Federal and State Universities in the Country(Nigeria) reflects the commitment of Government on tertiary education as is stated in the Revised National Policy on Education. The fast increasing number of graduates in various academic disciplines not withstanding individual motive for education at tertiary level is still hinged on the need for a certificate for job procurement.
It appears that not much work has been published on career choices in this country. This exercise is carried out with a view to establishing career areas of interest to students and the influence which parents have on the choice of such careers. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to Class V students in 20 Secondary Schools in the Cross River State. In all, 387 completed and returned the questionnaire.
Analysis has revealed that parents influence to a large extent the choice of careers and that emphasis is seriously shifted from Agriculture and Teaching to areas of Medical Sciences, Law and Engineering.
