$1.50

The paper examines the phenomenal growth and popularity of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the global educational scene. It draws illustrations from the emergence of MOOCs in the United Kingdom and the United States of America occasioned by wide demand for less formal and less rigid, yet high and quality education in recent times. It is observed that MOOCs are enhanced by development in communication technology and propelled by revolutionary devices as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Edx and iPhones, among others. It is noted that in Nigeria MOOCs are associated with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), and the remarkable in-roads made in the use of online communication technology. The paper explores the opportunities and challenges of MOOCs in enhancing quality learning and teaching, and zeroes in on the role of Nigerian libraries and library professionals in this global development. There is a great need for creating awareness providing on-line information and evaluation of web resources. The librarian should use the emergence of MOOCs to update her knowledge on mobile and web—based technologies, especially social media, Nigerian Universities should provide infrastructure and training for staff, ensure openness, collaboration, linkages and integration for the effective consolidation of the gains of MOOCs.
